Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen,

First of all, I would like to thank for giving me time and opportunity to say a few words at this discussion. In this occasion, I would like to speak about ‘Is Homework Necessary”

As we know, in SMA N 8 Yogyakarta, some teachers often give us homework, ordinary homework and extraordinary homework. Of course all teachers have good reason for giving us homework. In Hakarya Eka Pakci, we were trained to be hardworker and not to be lazy person because lazy person can not stay in SMA N 8 Yogyakarta.

What I mean with ordinary homework is homework that can be done for one or two days like mathemathic homework or biology homework in “LKS”. And extraordinary homework is homework that need a long time and hard work to be done like lab work report or “laprak”, water rocket video in the XI grade or lembah hijau report in the X grade.

I think, the positive points of homework is force us to study and to be discipline. Each homework have its deadline, so we also trained to manage our time. Lazy student can be forced not to be lazy. They become have power and spirit to study. They can fill their empty time to study, not to waste time for useless or “just having fun” activity like play game in computer.

The negative points of homework is if too many homeworks with short deadline, we can be stress, frustrated and get “heavy brain”. We have no time to refresh our mind because we always spend our time to do homework. And if we are not submit our homework punctual, it can make us more frustrated and worry. The final way, we’re cheating with copy our friend’s homework. Homework or “Pekerjaan Rumah (PR)” is task given by teacher to do at home. But why most of us often do homework at school? What is homework given for? It means homework become useless because we didn’t study. We usually underestimate ordinary homework, but actually ordinary homework is the best way to study.

In the XI grade, I’m pretty sure we often have empty time, we usually use the empty time to watch movie in the class, go to the canteen or playing card. We go home earlier than the other grade, but it was balance because we have many extraordinary homeworks to do like organize events, OSIS and extracullicular. In the XII grade, it becomes so different, XII grade is the shortest term in SMA. We often go home late because we must get additional lesson. We only have short time remain to prepare National Exam. We spend most of the time at school. And I think we have no time to do extraordinary homework. So I think that extraordinary homework should not given in the XII grade especially in the second term. We should focus to the national exam, school exam and prepare for practical exam.

In conclusion, homework has more positive effect than the negative effect. So homework is necessary. Thank you.
